The Cape Classic began in 2013 when Camps Bay resident and keen cyclist Andrew Selby identified a need for a locally focused, multi-stage road cycling event. After a small “test run,” the vision took shape: a beautifully curated 3-day tour through Montagu that would challenge riders without the pressure of racing. From 2014 to 2017, the Classic grew slowly but steadily, earning a reputation for its intimate group size, personal atmosphere, and outstanding support team. Though marketing limitations kept numbers modest, rider feedback was consistently enthusiastic — a sign of the event’s untapped potential.
In 2018, ownership transferred to Tony Pushman and Craig Edwards of Cape Cycle Tours (Pty) Ltd, who brought renewed structure, strategic focus, and expanded media visibility. The event welcomed high-profile journalists and cycling personalities. Supported by Wesgro, the Classic was able to invest in professional photography, media hosting, and broader promotional exposure — helping cement its reputation as one of the Western Cape’s standout boutique cycling tours. The Classic also became recognised for its exceptional inclusivity, with over 40% female participation year after year — a rare achievement in South African road cycling.
As word-of-mouth grew and rider experiences continued to exceed expectations, the Cape Classic 380 reached a major milestone in 2025 when the event hit its rider capacity for the first time. Capped at 100 riders, the idea was to preserve the Classic’s signature intimate atmosphere, personalised support, high safety standards, and Hazel Pushman’s unmatched home-made water table snacks. This milestone reflects more than numbers — it confirms the event’s evolution into one of the most trusted and beloved small-group road tours in South Africa. Riders now join from across the Western Cape, major SA cities, and even internationally, with many returning year after year.
From its grassroots origins to becoming a fully subscribed, capped event in 2025, the Cape Classic 380 has stayed true to its core: world-class riding with a deeply personal touch. With growing demand, strong community support, and an exceptional rider experience, the Classic continues to strengthen its place as a must-do tour on the South African cycling calendar.
A beautiful route.
